Jar's Beginner's Class in Augsburg, Germany

by Roman aka jar

Good Morning Jungle people,

the last couple of months I was teaching a lot.
2018 marks a spot for me as I am recovering from a travel burn out and try to organise all my seminars in my hometown Augsburg in Germany, Bavaria.

I am grateful.
Full of thanks to everyone who comes to these seminars to learn from me.
This class review is about my first english spoken beginner's class and I am thankful to all my students who travelled from Hungary, Bulgaria, Czech Republic, France, Austria, Ireland, Germany, Sweden and even White Russia. I feel very honored and I am happy that this class brought joy to every painter's heart after two and a half days.

Many thanks to Peter for helping me organising this seminar.
Without your help I would have been lost.

Well, Beginner Class?
What is it? A quote from the Workshop review section:

"The word 'beginner' might be confusing to many first time participants of this class.
It is not a class for 'only' beginners. In fact it is a class for every person, at every age interested in figure painting, whatever their experience level is.

'Beginners class' means here that Roman aka jarhead gives an introduction into his way of thinking while painting, in detail a lot of important theory is explained while doing a walk through Art History and is used in practical exercises. During the weekend you will not only learn to improve your painting skills, you will also learn the 'Why?' behind everything explained and with that you will be able to teach yourself in your own hobby future by just recognizing what nature has to offer.

The theory parts contain:

- Learn to see your world with different eyes
- Introduction into basing composition
- Learn how to feel harmony in different aspects
- Important contrasts for figure painting
- Explanation about how to paint a light situation on your figure
- Understand colour theory and learn how to use it properly
- Learn about different materials, their unique properties and learn to paint them
- Learn to lose fear of doing something wrong
- much more!

Roman's experience level in doing this class is very high as he has done 64 classes over the last years and thaught easily over a thousand students in this specific class.

Now to the review, eh?

First some impressions ... Norbert made me a great gift, a little Rose and a Gorilla.
Will find something that I paint in return for him.

We had colorful explosions ...

Night moments ...

We meet up in my old school, where I studied to become a teacher. A great venue to teach at.

After some theory and introduction we started to work on our bases at Friday night. For many it was the first time building a display base and joy was not avoidable. It just arrived.

Thanks to Ilya from White Russia who supported this review with his wonderful photos. He was a great photo ninja and caught beautiful portraits and still lifes during the class. Many thanks, Ilya.

When it comes to the basing part of this class I got to thank the supporters of this class who made the class wonderful due their help in sponsoring some of their products, beside Roman's crazy material collection:

After basing the long night of theory started - as long as the projector works :D

Saturday morning arrived
- like always - faster than expected and after the long night of theory it is good to readjust things on the bases, prep everything for priming at noon and start rather focused, but still relaxed. Color theory, preparing the figure and finalising the basework.

Coffee. Some just can't paint without it ...

Saturday went along with a lot of tasks for my students. Good talks approaced as the workshop members got to know eachother. Inspiration is everywhere, often at your neighbours table.

And then we primed.

Perfect priming poses.

Waited for primer to be free and trained the epic look to distant shores.

Discussed alternative priming methods ...

... or were just looking forward to paint finally on a painting workshop :)

After a lot of painting was done,
base and figure I had something in mind to relax the brains of my students a little bit. A challenge. A contest for strong painters: Toothpick-Throw!

Everybody had to paint his very own toothpick in his favourite colors and we all went to the hallway to see who is the strongest warrior. The winner recieved some really good miniature candy. Congratulations once again!

Look at this anxiety! Like spartans throwing spears! Aaaoouuwww!!

Sunday
In the meantime the classroom board had a lot of explanation weight to carry:

Sunday was packed with little tasks.
Tiny works to do here and explanations by me.

Colorful fingers and figures appeared here and there!

During Sunday everyone was pushing his project further along. Close to finish after two hard days of learning and training. Of course we did a group photo of us ... or at least tried :D

Well, yeah we did. A pretty cool one in terms of angle and such!

Let's look at my students results one by one ...

Again I want to thank all of you for a wonderful weekend, good chats, tons of happy painting time and I hope to see some of you soon on anotheer seminar in Augsburg.
